Đánh giá sản phẩm in bằng thiết bị đo, thang đo là điều cần thiết và bắt buộc. Tuy nhiên, việc đánh giá màu sắc thông qua cảm nhận thị giác cũng không kém phần quan trọng khi xem xét tổng thể và các hiệu ứng thị giác được tạo ra từ sản phẩm in. Một số lưu ý khi đáng giá màu được trình bày ngắn dưới đây.
Vì màu sắc là sự phản chiếu của ánh sáng, nên loại ánh sáng chiếu vào mẫu sẽ ảnh hưởng rất lớn đến nhận thức màu sắc của chúng ta. Mặc dù đều là ánh sáng “trắng” nhưng nó có thể là tập hợp các bước sóng khác nhau, vì thế dẫn đến “màu trắng” của các ánh sáng khác nhau. Để minh họa hiện tượng này, hình dưới đây cho thấy hiệu ứng của cùng một đối tượng khi được xem dưới ba nguồn sáng khác nhau.

Ánh sáng mà chúng ta nhìn thấy màu sắc là một biến có thể được kiểm soát. Chuẩn hóa và kiểm soát các điều kiện xem và kiểm tra màu sắc có thể loại bỏ sự khác biệt trong quy trình đánh giá và phê duyệt màu sắc của sản phẩm in và tăng thêm tính nhất quán của nhận thức và giao tiếp màu sắc.
Để giảm các biến số trong quá trình giao tiếp màu. Hiện nay đa số sử dụng các chuẩn phổ biến là của Viện Tiêu chuẩn Quốc gia Hoa Kỳ (ANSI-American National Standards Institute) đã chỉ định các điều kiện coi màu trong ANSI PH2.30-1989. Các tiêu chuẩn quốc gia khác (BS 950 ở Vương quốc Anh) và quốc tế (ISO 3664) cũng đang được sử dụng, về cơ bản giống với các thông số kỹ thuật của ANSI.
Với các công việc liên quan đến màu sắc, như thiết kế, in thử và in sản lượng, cách tốt nhất và dễ dàng nhất để đạt được các điều kiện xem tiêu chuẩn được khuyến nghị là sử dụng buồng xem màu và với các yếu tố cơ bản sau đây:
- Sử dụng nguồn sáng 5.000° Kelvin (được chỉ định là D50), bởi vì nguồn sáng cụ thể này mô phỏng ánh sáng ban ngày và có tỷ lệ các bước sóng ánh sáng RGB bằng nhau. Nhiệt độ màu thay đổi khi đèn cũ dần, vì thế nên sử dụng thời gian đèn theo khuyến cáo của nhà sản xuất. Một số loại đèn LED có tuổi thọ lên đến 20.000 giờ.
- Góc chiếu sáng trong khoảng 22–24° cho nguồn sáng để tránh gây chói mắt.
- Thời gian khởi động từ 10–15 phút để đèn có thể đạt đến nhiệt độ ổn định trước khi bắt đầu quá trình xem màu.
- Sử dụng sơn xám tiêu chuẩn Munsell N8 cho các vách của buồng coi bài, để ngăn các màu liền kề ảnh hưởng đến nhận thức màu sắc. Giữ cho khu vực bên trong và xung quanh buồng sạch sẽ và gọn gàng cũng rất cần thiết. Hình ảnh, tờ báo, áp phích hoặc tài liệu có màu sắc rực rỡ khác trong hoặc gần khu vực coi màu cũng có thể ảnh hưởng đến việc xem màu. Ngay cả khi quan sát màu sắc trong buồng xem màu tiêu chuẩn, màu áo mà bạn (hoặc khách hàng của bạn) cũng có thể gây ảnh hưởng đến việc nhìn màu. Ví dụ, áo màu đỏ có thể phản chiếu xuống bản in thử hoặc tờ in, ảnh hưởng đến nhận thức về màu sắc.

Mặc dù nhận thức về màu sắc mang tính chủ quan — và đôi khi là tùy ý — nhưng kiến thức về màu sắc có thể giúp khách hàng và nhà in tìm thấy đủ điểm chung để tạo điều kiện giao tiếp khi đánh giá sản phẩm.
